Shropshire & mid Wales meeting

It was the 1st Thursday of the month yesterday which is when the Shropshire & mid Wales WSCC guys meet up. Despite the weather there was 5 westfields in attendance including myself.

It was great to look at the features & customisation of other cars and I came away with a few ideas. It was also an evening of firsts with the first use of my shower cap to keep the drizzle off the cockpit while we were parked up followed by my first drive in the rain and then lastly my first drive in the dark. The headlights are pretty poor and I’m thinking some better quality bulbs might be a worthwhile investment. But otherwise it was a great evening and I’ll definatley be back in June.

I’m still having some jip with hesitancy at low speeds so will look to book in at a rolling road once we get back from our upcoming holidays.

Out with the old, in with the new – airfilters

The airfilters on the car look pretty sorry and may be the originals from when it was built so replacing them was always on the to-do list. The replacements arrived in the post this week so this afternoon I set about swapping them over.

This is one of the existing Weber filters:

It was easy enough to open the housing via the single screw and remove the filter. Then there were 4 nuts to undo to release the pipes and therefore the base plate.

Beneath em the base plate was a tatty looking paper gasket. This was removed and the surface cleaned.

The new filters came with a new cork  gasket and then it was on with the new base plate.

Lastly it’s a squeeze to get the new filters into place and on with the top plate, this time secured with two nuts.

All in a nice easy job.  The only hiccup (other than dropping nuts & washers in hard to reach places) was that the air temperature sensor is installed in one of the filer base plates.

I wasn’t keen on butchering the new base plates so a quick consultation on the internet revealed others had simply secured the sensor just outside the filters, in the incoming airflow. As this was quick & easy I went with this, securing via a pair of cable ties to the bracing just under the front filter – you can see the new white ties in the photo above. I can always change this later. Finally the best part – the test drive.  I mode the most of the dry sunny afternoon as the weekend forecast is not looking good.
